Gone
With The Wind, The Most
Popular Movie…in England?
Scarlett
would be overjoyed.
In
a survey of ticket sales
since the first talking
movie hit the big screen,
the British Film Institute
has declared that Gone
With The Wind is the
most watched movie in theaters
in the United Kingdom. With
35 million watchers, GWTW
almost doubled the second
most watched movie—Titanic
with 18.9 million tickets.
This
landmark result shows Gone
With The Wind as the
nation’s favorite over the
last 100 years—not being
chosen by a critic or by
a poll, but by actual ticket
sales.
To-date
worldwide, GWTW has raked
in $400,176,459--$198.7
million in the U.S. and
$201.5 million worldwide.
Not bad for Margaret Mitchell,
who used to throw a dish
towel over the typewriter
and the page of manuscript
in it when friends came
to visit because she didn’t
think her work was worth
being read.
